Konami

Go straight to Konami games list.

HISTORY

Konami has a long and storied franchise dating all the way back to 1969 when they opened their doors as a jukebox rental and repair company. Konami had their first major success with their arcade release of Frogger which is fondly nestled into the memories of many gamers from the Golden Age of Gaming. Success would continue to strike as the new companies emerged while the old ones forged forward with advanced gaming technologies and an increased appetite for everything digital. With success in the arcades, what was next for the ever-growing Konami?

In 1985, Konami began porting many of their arcade titles to the Famicom / NES, and this would prove to be extremely lucrative for both Nintendo and Konami. The sky was the limit for Konami and with the help of a number of excellent titles, a number of timeless franchises were born.

Some of Konami’s most notable franchises are also their most reputable and successful. Series such as Castlevania, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Metal Gear started in the 80s and are still going strong 25+ years later. While the Contra series may have fallen off a bit in recent years as far as game production goes, it still holds a strong level of reverence among fans and onlookers alike. While still fairly new in the gaming world, the BeatMania franchise is a smashing success with over 40 editions across multiple platforms. But before BeatMania, Konami created Dance Dance Revolution which kept the kids lining up at arcades across America. And how could we forget the Gradius series? The Gradius franchise may not have seen as many releases as Castlevania or TMNT, but it is also a highly regarded franchise.

No matter what kind of games you are into, there’s a strong chance you’ve encountered a Konami game at least once in your life. Aside from a long line of strong franchises, Konami has a number of other successful releases on a smaller scale with games/serieses such as Lethal Enforcers, Let’s Yoga, Mirmo!, Mystical Ninja, Parodius, Vandal Hearts, Q*Bert, Rocket Knight Adventures, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Silent Hill, Tennis No Ouji Sama, Tokimeki Memorial, and Track & Field for the NES to name a few. Then there’s the one title that has the potential to uproot EA Sports’ grasp on professional soccer, and that’s Pro-Evolution Soccer which has been going very strong since 2008. These are just a few of the hundreds upon hundreds of titles either developed or published by Konami.

The term “going strong” should be synonymous with Konami. While they’ve undoubtedly had their fair share of flops, the successes that they have had more than makes up for all of it. Since hitting a home run with Frogger in 1981, they’ve been an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. There’s no brakes on this Konami freight-train.
