Square Enix Reveals Dragon Quest XI

Square Enix Reveals Dragon Quest XI

One of Japan’s most beloved game series is finally receiving a canonical sequel.

Square Enix held a special event this morning to reveal that Dragon Quest XI is currently under development for both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS, as well as “under consideration” for Nintendo’s upcoming NX system, currently under development.

The PlayStation 4 version of Dragon Quest XI is being developed by Orca and will utilize the Unreal 4 engine for some lovely next-gen visuals, while the Nintendo 3DS version will feature a mixture of proprietary 3D graphics displayed on the upper screen and classic 2D sprites displayed on the 3DS’s bottom screen.

Dragon Quest XI’s narrative will take a unique turn with the story being told from different character perspectives depending on which version of the game you are playing.

Takeshi Uchikawa has been named as the director for Dragon Quest XI, with veteran series composer Koichi Sugiyama once again lending his immense talents to the game’s musical score.

No specific release date was revealed as of yet for Dragon Quest XI, although Square Enix said that they are targeting a date in 2016 to coincide with the Dragon Quest series’ 30th anniversary.

Square Enix also announced that they will be porting Dragon Quest X to the PlayStation 4. The MMO entry in the series was initially released in 2012 for the Wii and in 2013 for the Wii U.

You can check out footage from today’s Dragon Quest XI presentation of both the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS versions down below.
