A Release Date May Be Close To Reality For PlayStation VR

A Release Date May Be Close To Reality For PlayStation VR

Looks like Sony is finally getting ready to blow the lid off of its upcoming PlayStation VR.

According to IGN, Sony has begun sending out invitations to a special, “exclusive, invite-only, press event scheduled for March 15th.” The flyer, pictured below, is succinct in its intention of focusing exclusively on the PlayStation VR.

While we don’t have confirmation yet aside from the promised availability of playable demos, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to come to the conclusion that Sony will most likely be revealing the price and release date for its long-in-development virtual reality accessory to the PlayStation 4 console.

PlayStation VR’s potential price-point will be of key interest if it is indeed announced at the March 15th briefing. Speculation has been running high as to how much consumers will be expected to shell out for the device, after Sony’s CEO Andrew House noted that the “unit will be priced as a new gaming platform.” The price of the PlayStation 4 is currently $349.

Sony will not be the only challenger entering the proverbial arena when it finally does launch the system. The company will be facing competition from two other virtual reality platforms that are launching this year.

Facebook has invested $2 billion in Oculus Rift, which will require a PC and will retail for $599 when it begins shipping this March.

If this is what the future is going to look like, then count me out.

HTC and the gurus behind the Steam gaming platform, Valve have teamed up for their own VR platform: HTC Vive. This device will also require a PC and will retail for $799 when it begins shipping in April.

Given that the two above mentioned VR platforms are already quite a bit more expensive than a PlayStation 4 console, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to see a $299 stand alone PlayStation VR sku, accompanied by a $700 bundle that includes the PlayStation 4 hardware, along with the PlayStation VR unit. However, that is only speculation at this point, based off of House’s comments.

The good news is that March 15th is only a few short weeks away, so at least we won’t have to wait too long to see what Sony has in store for the gaming masses regarding the PlayStation VR.

Are you ready to leave your world behind and enter Sony’s version of reality when PlayStation VR launches? How much are you willing to pay for the device? Put your virtual thoughts into our electronic, cyber-space inhabiting message board (which I take very seriously in real reality) below.
