Gameplay of Strange PS4 Exclusive Wattam Revealed

Gameplay of Strange PS4 Exclusive Wattam Revealed

Revealed at the PlayStation Experience in December 2014, Wattam, the newest creation from Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi, was described as a wonderful world where toys live and connect by themselves. This sounds Toy Story-esque, but one should know that nothing can be that simple when it comes to Takahashi’s work.

While not much info could be gleaned from the teaser trailer above, beside that Wattam‘s green cube of a mayor has a bomb under his hat, the newest footage of the game (via Polygon) gives us a much better view of exactly what Wattam is about.

While the concept of Katamari Damacy, rolling around a sticky ball that picks things up and grows in mass with the collection of items until time runs out and your ball is made a star, is definitely out there, the gameplay was as simple as rolling over things to collect them. Takahashi’s other game, Noby Noby Boy, was a bit more obtuse. The goal of the game was to eat and then to stretch your character, with all players lengths being added together to stretch across the cosmos to unlock other levels. Gameplay was a bit confusing, and the game isn’t as well known as Katamari Damacy. Wattam seems to be balanced delicately in the middle of the two titles.

The pillow’s ability is, appropriately, to lull others to sleep.

Gameplay revolves around finding and interacting with new friends. These friends include sushi, clouds, lawnmowers, poop, coffee, pillows, and other random objects, all created in the charming Katamari Damacy art style. When controlling one of these many characters, you can hold hands with other friends, and use the unique ability of each friend to find more characters or progress further in the levels. For example, the turntable can “party”, the lawmower can “mow”, and the mayor can “bomb.” As to how these abilities will get you more friends, a cloud can use “rain” to bloom friends up from the ground.

There is no caption that could fit a photo as wonderful as this. Please note that there is a turntable balanced on sushi, the mayor is chilling inside the cup of coffee, and that the Deputy is standing on a mushroom named Dick.

Finding as many friends as possible, having them all huddle together and/or stack on top of each other, and then using bomb seems to be the ultimate goal of the game. The more characters together, the better. Upon using the command, they all shoot into the sky, with various colored jet-streams behind them. It’s quite a sight to behold.

We believe it’ll be even better to play. For more news on Wattam, and plenty of other weird titles, stay tuned to Nerd Bacon.
