Smash Bros splats onto the Nintendo Switch in 2018!

Smash Bros splats onto the Nintendo Switch in 2018!

Two days ago when the rumors of a Nintendo Direct dropped, the first question to come to everyone’s mind was, “Will this show or announce a Super Smash Bros game for the Nintendo Switch?” Well ladies and gentlemen… we have our answer as Nintendo waited until just after the 30 minute mark of its Direct to drop a massive bombshell on Nintendo and Smash fans everywhere. Super Smash Bros. is coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2018! It has finally happened! It’s coming! I’m exploding with all different emotions!

While the teaser started off looking very similar to the original Splatoon teaser trailer from E3 in 2014 with a battle between Inkling girl and Inkling boy, it quickly moved into new territory. After a few seconds of fast paced action we saw the screen go black, Inkling girl turn her head, only to have a burning Smash Bros. logo focus into her eye and then on the screen.

It’s been just under four years at the time of this article since the last Smash Bros. game released and the trailer ended with a 2018 release reveal.  This means that this will be the shortest time between two Super Smash Bros. game releases in the history of the series. Which of course brings me to my next question… is this a Wii U “deluxe” edition or a brand new Smash Bros. game altogether? Only time with truly tell, but my gut is telling me that this is an all new entry into the series.

Why? Because Nintendo needs a new Smash game that can unite the Super Smash Bros. Melee community with the community that has grown with the franchise.

In the trailer we also see both the Inklings from Splatoon which will make their debut in a Smash Bros. game. We also see the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Link as a silhouette which means that they are moving on from the Twilight Princess version that we have seen in years past. I also believe that this is a new addition because when this was announced it was announced as “Super Smash Bros. (working title).” This has to be the iteration of this game that brings the two communities together. It simply just has to. Nintendo has been watching the growing popularity of fighting game tournaments like EVO with a close eye so you know they want to unite the two Smash communities under one banner.

Let’s also not forget that Nintendo has a paid online service on the horizon this year. A new Smash game would be the perfect title to launch Nintendo’s paid online service with.

No matter what it ends up being, Super Smash Bros. with its working title is going to be on your Nintendo Switch later this year. Will you be picking up the newest addition to the series when it releases? What new characters would you want to see in a new Smash Bros. game? You better believe myself and the rest of the Level Up Lariat Show cast will be talking about these things and more in the months leading up to it’s eventual release. As always stay tuned to NerdBacon.com for the latest in Super Smash Bros. and all things video games.
