Earthworm Jim Speedrun World Record! – VIDEO
For many of us, games are something more than just a pastime. Some of these games are significant parts of our identities, creating moments that connect us uniquely with other people throughout our lives. Recently one gamer, David Klingler, displayed this sentiment in an amazing and heartfelt way…
August 16th, 2021 marked 25 years since David first began playing games, when his brother Mitchell got Earthworm Jim Special Edition for Windows 95 for his 8th birthday – their first video game. From there, gaming was the bond between the brothers – leading David into competitive gaming and eventually into founding the video game company Solanimus in 2011, which he still runs day-to-day.
In 2016, the world was dealt a devastating loss: Mitchell passed away. So, in honor and loving memory of his brother, David set out to claim a new world record on that game that started it all… and he did just that, premiering the new speedrun on his late brother’s birthday.
“It’s because of Mitchell that I first played games. I will always miss my brother, but I can always honor all the memories with him playing these games.” ~David Klingler
Many of the tricks in this speedrun require immense precision that can seem inhuman at times. Some are frame-perfect tricks, and some would fail with just slightly too little momentum, which means planning ahead with perfect timing along the way.
This run is specific to the Special Edition version of Earthworm Jim, which includes extra sections that people familiar with other versions may not recognize.
No doubt, Mitchell would be smiling ear-to-ear seeing this feat by his brother in this favorite game of theirs. It’s good to see new creative ways of remembering those you love.
