One of the most high-profile games that Sony will be releasing this year for the PlayStation 4 was curiously absent during their big showcase event Monday evening.

Gran Turismo Sport, the next installment of the series that revolutionized the racing genre in 1998 (USA) on the PlayStation, was for whatever reason, relegated to Sony’s less watched E3 2017 pre-show programming.

Polyphony’s Digital’s Kazunori Yamauchi joined the GameSpot E3 2017 stage Thursday to talk a bit about Gran Turismo Sport.

While it was disappointing that Gran Turismo Sport missed its original 2016 release window, Yamauchi said that the extra year of development has allowed them the time needed to add the extra level of polish he felt the game needed -noting that the quality of the title has risen exponentially.

While Gran Turismo Sport will offer the most robust online features yet seen in a Gran Turismo title, that doesn’t mean that the game is focusing on multiplayer exclusively. Yamauchi noted that Gran Turismo Sport will feature the most modes in any GT title to date, including an extensive single player experience with 145 different events.

He also talked a bit about Virtual Reality.

He noted that the first headsets were actually developed in the 1960’s, and spoke about how the technology has evolved up to this point. Interestingly, Yamauchi said that although he is excited about PlayStation VR technology, he isn’t necessarily satisfied with the level that the current technology has achieved yet.

Gran Turismo Sport is slated to come out later this year for the PlayStation 4.
