Start Your Engines – Gran Turismo Sport Announced For PlayStation 4

The granddaddy of modern racing games is set to return on PlayStation 4.

Sony and developer Polyphony Studios announced Gran Turismo Sport, the next entry in the nearly twenty year old driving simulation franchise, during their press event at the 2015 Paris Game Week.

Gran Turismo Sport aims to encompass the one hundred year history of motor sports that can be enjoyed by players of all ages, from 7 to 77, although how they intend to accomplish that was not detailed.

What was detailed was that Gran Turismo Sport is being developed as “the most realistic driving simulator of all the Gran Turismo to date.” according to Producer Kazunori Yamauchi.

Gran Turismo Sport will partner with FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) and feature two online championships in which players can compete. Nation’s Cup will invoke nationalistic pride as gamers take to Gran Turismo Sport‘s tracks to represent their country. Subsequently, the Manufacturer’s Cup will stoke the fires of automobile fan-boyism.

Yamauchi also revealed that Gran Turismo Sport is being developed with PlayStation VR in mind, stating:

“[T]hrough various testing that we’ve performed so far, it looks like the experience will be something very good, that feels very natural.”

The legendary developer told the audience that he chose Paris Games Week as the location to announce Gran Turismo Sport because the city was the first in the world to host a motor race in 1894, as well as the location of the headquarters of the FIA.

No release date was given for Gran Turismo Sport, however they plan to launch a beta test in early 2016.
