Spiders Reveals New RPG: GreedFall – Full Preview
RPG powerhouse, Spiders, the studio behind games like Technomancer and Of Orcs and Men has come together once again with publisher Focus Home Interactive (Blood Bowl, Call of Cthulhu) to create GreedFall; a new fantasy RPG primed for release next year. Though still in its infancy, there’s quite a bit of hype surrounding the mysterious new game.
Initially announced earlier this year, not much is known about this self-proclaimed mystery RPG. This article aims to cover most of what we know so far about GreedFall. Exact setting, graphics and gameplay are still up in the air for now, as all we have are statements from the devs, the publisher, and a short reveal teaser. Fortunately, there is still plenty of time for more information to develop!
Set in the 17th century, players are able to explore a beautiful and magical island full of riches and adventure! Jehanne Rousseau, head of Spiders, explains:
“GreedFall is set in a fantasy world with magic, adventure, and 17th century weaponry. We’re looking for a very unique visual aesthetic inspired by Baroque art from 17th Century Europe, complete with grandiose sceneries and environments in warm, muted colors, and dark undertones.”
So far, the graphics for GreedFall appear gorgeous, though a little stiff in the teaser below. Regardless, it looks like a great deal of effort went into the minute and a half long trailer. Check it out:

The teaser shows what appears to be a spriggan fleeing from a stoic-looking colonial soldier, set to the song The Wolves ft. Keeley Bumford by Killer Tracks (or Cyrus Reynolds depending on where you look). The soldier eventually guns down and corners the spriggan in an open field. However, just before the man can finish off the forest spirit, it summons forth a great beast that attacks the soldier. As the monster and the soldier clash, the trailer comes to a screeching halt, leaving the outcome of the fight up to the viewer’s imagination. Being that the environment is inspired by the Baroque art of the 17th century (think The Birth of Venus), players can expect a vivid world full of movement, life, and intricate detail.
Not much is known about the actual gameplay mechanics, but Focus Home puts it like this:
“Explore a fresh new world as you set foot―alongside many other settlers, mercenaries, and treasure hunters―on a remote island seeping with magic, rumored to be filled with riches and lost secrets. A grand journey filled with mystery follows as you find yourself in the middle of ever-increasing tensions between the invading settlers and the locals protected by supernatural beings―manifestations of the island’s earthly magic.“
If the gameplay is anything like the trailer: I’m in!
So far we’ve seen that GreedFall will take place on a mysterious island, full of mysterious factions, with creatures shrouded in mystery, following an equally mysterious story. It will be up to us, the players, to unlock the mysteries hidden within.
Supposedly, the focus will be on RPG elements and choices made by the player. The gameplay of GreedFall is supposedly going to be jam-packed with options for all play styles. Players will be able to focus on combat, diplomacy, stealth, you-name-it. It’s been stated that the world of GreedFall evolves with the player. Each choice made will somehow effect the way the rest of the game will pan out, even trivial decisions. It is up to the player to decide what factions to side with, and who maintains control of the remote island of GreedFall. Assuming that any role is playable, the teaser could potentially be an encounter players have to look forward to from both sides!
We can assume that there will be a healthy mix of 17th century weaponry with some magic peppered in. Whether or not players will be able to use magic is still up for debate. Assuming that the game stays true to the teaser, we can expect a fair bit of monster hunting as well, making this game like the offspring of Bloodborne and Mass Effect.
It is not known yet whether there will be a multiplayer element to GreedFall, be it a co-op mode or a full on open-world MMO like Neverwinter. Regardless, judging by environmental and character concept art, we can assume we’ll have a fair amount of exploring and customizing to do.
So all things considered, we have more questions than answers! Will players be able to use both weapons and magic? What kinds of skills can players expect to use? What factions are vying for control of GreedFall? What kinds of classes will be available? The ultimate question for me is: what do we have to look forward to?
Let’s hope that we get some answers soon!
In the weeks leading up to E3 and the months ahead of 2018 we should see a good deal of coverage on this game.
