The PS3 is Not Dead: A Look at 5 Games Coming in 2014
This year’s E3 may have left Sony users without a PlayStation 4 feeling a bit snubbed. The fact of the matter is that developers and publishers are creating a growing number of next-gen exclusive games, leaving last-gen console in the dust.
Last-gen is not dead yet. Many publishers are still investing in 7th-gen consoles, to the extent that there are previous generation exclusive games set to come out in the next year.
Here is a list of 5 impressive looking games that will come out for the PS3 before the end of 2014.
Tales of Xillia 2
Tales of Xillia 2 is a Japanese role-playing game that was originally released in Japan for the PlayStation 3 in 2012. Tales of Xillia 2 is now making its way to the United States and Europe in August. What’s even better is that Tales of Xillia 2 is PlayStation 3 exclusive.
Tales of Xillia 2 takes place after the first game. This game follows Ludger Will Kresnik who has the ability to access and destroy alternate timelines. In order to keep the world in balance, an influential company hires Kresnik to destroy alternate timelines.
Tales of Xillia 2 will be available exclusively for PlayStation 3 on August 19th.
Battlefield Hardline
Back at E3, Battlefield Hardline was one of EA’s biggest announcements. The Battlefield series is most known for its modern wartime settings but Battlefield Hardline takes the series in a new direction.
Battlefield Hardline is essentially a large elaborate game of cops and robbers (just like that game that you used to play on the elementary school playground). You can choose between being on the S.W.A.T. team or being a criminal-in-pursuit. Battlefield Hardline will feature different types of online multi-player modes as well as a single-player mode. In this game you will have the ability to perform heists, high speed chases, or hostage situations.
In June, EA opened a Beta for PS4 and PC users. That beta has since closed and EA announced that Battlefield Hardline would also be coming to PS3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One upon the game’s official release.
Battlefield Hardline will be officially released on October 21, 2014 on all compatible consoles, including the PS3.
The Evil Within
Love the fabulous genre of horror/survival? If so, The Evil Within will probably be your favorite game coming to PS3s this year.
While investigating a mass murder, Detective Sebastian Castellanos witnesses his partners being slaughtered by a mysterious force and is knocked unconscious. When he wakes up he finds himself in a world populated by horrific creatures and he must find a way to survive.
Published by Bethesda Softworks and developed by Tango Gameworks, The Evil Within will be released on October 21, 2014.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age: Inquisition is an action/adventure RPG that is the third of its series. Dragon Age: Inquisition is set in a fantasy land torn by a civil war between Mages and Templars. The player plays as the Inquisitor and leads the forces of the civil war; going on missions, taking forts, killing dragons . . . you know, the usual.
Former CEO of Bioware (the developer of Dragon Age: Inquisition) Ray Muzyka said in an interview with Wired.com that the new Dragon Age game would learn from Skyrim and would create a game that would reflect upon the interest of the open-world experience. Dragon Age: Inquisition will grow as a series by incorporating new features but will still retain it’s past by keeping what was successful.
Some new features will include a different slightly different combat system, expanded customization options, and a greater impact of your decisions in gameplay.
Dragon Age: Inquisition will be available on October 7, 2014.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a game that I’ve been looking forward to for quite a while now. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was announced in the later part of 2013 and has since then been given publicity up the ying-yang with the release of multiple trailers, gameplay demos, and inside looks even before E3. Here at the Bacon, we looked at Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor back in March when we were looking into the future of the PS4.
In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, you play as a Ranger who has lost everything at the hands of Sauron and is on a quest for revenge. Just as point of reference, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will take place somewhere between the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings saga.
What will make this game a game to remember is the nemesis system which will greatly effect gameplay. The nemesis system will allow for enemies to remember what you did to them and enable them to learn from their encounters with you. This feature will be its strongest in current-gen systems, so it will most likely not be as advanced in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will be released on October 7, 2014.
And More . . .
This list isn’t even the beginning of the LARGE list of games that will be coming out for the PS3. Some of the biggest PS3 games to come out haven’t been officially announced yet (Assassin’s Creed Comet, anyone?).
While the PS3’s era is coming to a close, it is not the end. People are still invested in the PS3 and game publishers recognize this. Many of the biggest “next-gen” titles showcased at this years E3 will also be released for last-gen consoles.
Fond memories were made during the PS3 era, and will continue to be made for the foreseeable future.
