The End Is Nigh – Bubsy Is Coming Back

The End Is Nigh – Bubsy Is Coming Back

There’s an old adage that claims that cats have nine lives. While this has never scientifically been proven on real felines, one developer is attempting to prove that old saying true, by resurrecting a classic gaming kitty mascot.

Bringing Bubsy back may not be a bad idea.

Retroism is attempting to bring back the Bubsy franchise with a new campaign through Steam Greenlight, called #SaveBubsy.

If successful, Retroism will launch the Bubsy Two-Fur, the first authorized re-release of the two original Bubsy outings that first appeared on the Super NES and Sega Genesis.

Accolade’s most notorious character had not been seen since an ill-fated venture into 3-D. Out of the blue, he showed up at Retroism’s doorstep, bedraggled and mumbling about being doomed to a legacy of shame and obscurity. But we’ve cleaned him up and given him a new lease on life, a shot at returning to the big time – but he’ll need your support!

The Bubsy series was publisher Accolade’s attempt at a cutesy mascot (animal mascots with attitude were pretty much a requirement for every publisher in the early ninties) platform game. The first title, Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind debuted in 1992. A follow-up, the more simply named Bubsy II, hit store shelves in 1994. Both games were decent, if flawed titles that tried to combine the platform action of Mario, with a dash of the speed found in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Bringing back Bubsy 3D should be considered a crime

A third title, Bubsy 3D, was unleashed on the PlayStation in 1996. The move to a 3D engine did not do any favors to the Bubsy formula and earned a myriad of harsh reviews, including GameSpot’s assessment that it was the “least fun action/platformer on the PlayStation.

The bleak burial of the series nearly twenty years ago has not deterred Retroism’s resolve though. The company has said that if the Bubsy Two-Fur garners enough support, he may be able to “find the strength within to go on new adventures again.”
