Castlevania Storyline
Overview
So if you didn’t already know, the whole of Castlevania concerns the attempts of a handful of individuals to thwart, stymie, repel, revoke, impede, obstruct, block, stop, hinder, frustrate, quash, or prevent the resurrection and eventual takeover of mankind by Dracula and his various agents seeing to such ends. For the most part, Castlevania follows the exploits of a family known as the Belmonts, but several games have included allies and familial offshoots of the original “Belmont clan.” As the legend goes, Dracula rises every 100 years (through various means) and the Belmonts are Transylvania’s premier vampire hunters, even possessing and passing down the famed Vampire Killer, a special whip imbued with power that makes it perfectly suited to (guess what) killing vampires and myriad other beasties.
The chronological releases haven’t followed the in-game timeline since the release of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, which followed the exploits of Trevor Belmont some 200 years before Simon’s adventures. Confusing the matter further is Konami’s seemingly sporadic inclusion and removal of certain games from the “official” timeline of events. Dealing with continuity errors like many parent companies of convoluted storylines, Konami neither validates nor invalidates the existence of these “outside” stories by acknowledging their place in an alternate universe of sorts.
Perhaps the most conspicuous example of these alternate continuities is the latest Lords of Shadow series. While adopting elements from previous games, Konami still maintains that the events take place in a different reality than the “main” series. Since the Lords of Shadow games do comprise their own self-contained timeline, their events will be handled separately. Otherwise, the “official” events in the timeline will be represented in green, while non-canon games are denoted in red.
