Yahoo Esports Shuts Down

Yahoo Esports Shuts Down

Yahoo will no longer be updating its dedicated Esports website, according to a Wednesday posting to the Yahoo Esports homepage.

Unfortunately, Yahoo Esports will no longer be updated after this Friday (June 16th). As Yahoo Sports becomes part of Oath, they are focusing on aligning with the new company strategy and are focused on growing the Yahoo Sports brand.” wrote Travis Gafford, the now former head of Esports Media for Yahoo.

Yahoo Esports was established early last year, providing thoughtful pieces across a number of different Esport genre’s. Articles went beyond delivering simple tournament results, often delving into the personalities behind the competitive gaming scene.

Michael Martin in particular, provided fantastic coverage of the fighting game community, becoming a staple fixture at tournaments and events throughout the past year.

Yahoo Esports is not alone in seeing the metaphorical ax today.

According to the entertainment outlet Deadline, new parent conglomerate, Oath, a subsidiary of Verizon, has decided to cut more than 2,100 jobs throughout its massive media empire. This represents roughly 15% of the corporation’s workforce, which encompasses media outlets such as Yahoo, AOL, Tumblr, and a multitude of others.

The Deadline article also mentions that the layoffs come the day after Oath wrapped up its scooping of Yahoo properties.

We sincerely wish everyone involved with Yahoo Esports all the best during this difficult time.
