Nerd Bacon Celebrates National Mario Day!

If you grew up in the ’80s or ’90s, you know who Mario is. If you’re remotely involved in the gaming world, you should know this Italian plumber! Mario is without a doubt the mascot of Nintendo. First introduced in Nintendo’s Donkey Kong, he was formerly known as Mr Jumpman. He was also a carpenter. But… Continue reading Nerd Bacon Celebrates National Mario Day!

Super Mario Land – Game Boy

We’ve been covering a lot of Wario lately, haven’t we? From his very first appearance in Super Mario Land 2 to Wario Land 4, and counting. But there’s something missing. A piece that hasn’t been covered yet. With mounting pressure to review sequels back in August, Nerd Bacon’s ZB skipped over the first Mario Land in favor of Super Mario Land 2. Now it’s time to finally tackle a game he’s been anxious to work on since before Nerd Bacon celebrated its two-year anniversary. That’s right folks, it’s Super Mario Land for Game Boy.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash – Wii U

Mario’s ventures into the world of tennis have always been one of his more well-respected spin-offs, so it would make sense to expect great things with the release of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash for the Wii U. However, while the game looks beautiful, it’s criminally shy of engaging content.

Mario’s Time Machine, another commonly derided title from Mario’s line of educational games, is a surprisingly honest trip through certain pieces of history. Super Mario Kart – SNES

The Mario Kart series is one of video gaming’s most popular franchises, and it all started here, with Super Mario Kart. Critics have heaped on loads of superlatives to this initial installment: best SNES graphics, top console game, one of the greatest of all time. However, I am of a slightly different persuasion…

Mario is Missing! – SNES

Mario is Missing!, one of a handful of educational Mario games released in the early 90’s, features Luigi as the main protagonist for the first time in the series. It may not be much of a “game,” but if you’re in the fourth or fifth grade and need to learn a few things about history and geography, there are certainly worse ways to go about it!

Super Mario Maker – Wii U

Super Mario Maker is an instant classic and the perfect way to celebrate Mario’s 30th birthday. Easy to learn and difficult to master, Super Mario Maker will have old and new fans alike cranking out Mario levels by the dozen, not to mention marveling at the diverse creations of others.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker – Wii U

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is a platformer/puzzle hybrid first introduced in Super Mario 3D Land – after almost 30 years, Toad finally gets his own game in the Mario universe! This game is full of amazing graphics, creative level design, and a fun new way to look at the platforming genre.

Mario Kart DS – Nintendo DS

Mario Kart DS is the first-ever Mario Kart game released on the DS, and it was an immediate hit. The revolutionary multiplayer, the sheer number of options, and the feasible yet challenging unlockables made this game extremely addictive and rarely boring, especially when played with friends.
