Relive Part of Gaming’s Golden Age With the TurboGrafx-16 mini – E3 2019

Relive Part of Gaming’s Golden Age With the TurboGrafx-16 mini – E3 2019

Nintendo hit a goldmine of nostalgia a few years ago with their releases of the NES mini and the SNES Classic.

Since then, a number of other companies have wisely decided to capitalize on these newly unearthed desires of the market. SNK released an excellent NEOGEO mini console, Sony released a very ill-received PlayStation Classic, and Sega is preparing their own entry with the Sega Genesis mini.

At E3 2019 we learned of yet another entry to the increasingly crowded field of miniature retro consoles: TurboGrafx-16.

That’s right! Hudson’s classic console, the TurboGrafx-16, also known in Japan (where it was far more popular) as the PC Engine, is getting the full retro treatment courtesy of Konami.

The TurboGrafx-16 mini will allow gamers to relive a piece of gaming history, while allowing a new generation of fans to experience a facsimile of the experience for the first time.

A number of games will already be hardwired into the TurboGrafx-16 mini when it launches, including:

  • R-Type
  • New Adventure Island
  • Ninja Spirit
  • Y’s Book I & II
  • Dungeon Explorer
  • Alien Crush

More games are teased for the system, but haven’t been revealed as of yet. We’d have to imagine that a few of those slots will be filled by Hudson’s iconic Bonk series.

Konami has not announced a release date or price yet for the TurboGrafx-16 mini. In the meantime, you can prepare yourself for this upcoming walk down memory lane by watching the dramatically scored announcement trailer below.
