Today at Sony’s conference in Paris, Quantic Dream unveiled their newest story driven PlayStation exclusive, Detroit: Become Human, based on a popular tech demo they released in 2012. Originally intended as nothing more than a showcase of their technological prowess and skill in storytelling, the tech demo titled Kara now serves as the foundation for Detroit. The demo received over 20 million views, and fans seemed so interested in the unfinished story of the young robot girl that Quantic Dream decided to flesh out the idea for their next title. The story will focus on a unique android that, through a mistake during creation, is capable of emotion and independent thought. The relationship between humans and androids will be explored, as well as what it means to truly be alive. Just like Quantic Dream’s last title, Beyond: Two Souls, Detroit: Become Human is visually stunning. The character models and environments here are a sight to behold.
As far as the gameplay in Detroit: Beyond Human goes, not much was announced. Director David Cage spoke about the game’s origin and themes, but no mention was made of what genre the title is or what mechanics are in the game. However, it’s fairly safe to assume that Detroit will resemble Quantic Dream’s previous titles like Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain, and Beyond: Two Souls in style. These titles are defined by their focus on story, the importance of choice, exploration, and QTEs.
If you’re excited to explore the idea of humanity in future Detroit, hold your horses. With no release window announced and no gameplay shown, it’s likely that it’ll be quite some time before Detroit: Become Human launches. While we wait, check back with Nerd Bacon for more news on this cinematic sci-fi title.
