Nintendo Announces The SNES Classic Edition!

Nintendo Announces The SNES Classic Edition!

Get ready to fight off the hordes of fellow game players, as well as dubious scalpers.

Nintendo announced Monday that they will be releasing the SNES Classic Edition, a miniaturized version of their fabled 16-bit console, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

The follow-up to their wildly successful NES Classic Edition will feature 21 classic SNES titles, including the never-before-released Star Fox 2, already hardwired into the unit and ready to go.

Behold! A thing you WILL buy!!!

Behold! A thing you WILL buy!!! You are powerless to resist the SNES Classic Edition.

The 21 titles included with the SNES Classic Edition read like a veritable who’s who list of the greatest games ever made:

Contra III: The Alien Wars
Donkey Kong Country
EarthBound
Final Fantasy III
F-ZERO
Kirby Super Star
Kirby’s Dream Course
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mega Man X
Secret of Mana
Star Fox
Star Fox 2
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Castlevania IV
Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
Yoshi’s Island

The list of classic games that are included with the SNES Classic Edition fall largely in line with a wishlist feature story that NerdBacon.com published in April of this year.

Earlier this year, Nintendo caused a ruckus after announcing that they would discontinue production of the nearly impossible to find NES Classic Edition, which had been plagued with limited supply issues from the moment it launched.

It wasn’t long after the discontinuation news hit that rumors started to circulate regarding Nintendo’s potential development of a similar unit based off the SNES design.

Nintendo did confirm to Kotaku’s Jason Scherier Monday that they were planning on shipping out “significantly more units” of the SNES Classic Edition than what they had provided during the run of its predecessor. It remains to be seen however, whether or not those extra units will meet the product demand that was demonstrated last year during the NES Classic’s time at retail.

The SNES Classic Edition will launch on September 29th, 2017, and will retail for $79.99.

Does the impending launch of the SNES Classic Edition fill you with nostalgic dreams of glory? Let us know in the comments section below.
