New Details and Release Date for Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening – E3 2019

New Details and Release Date for Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening – E3 2019

One of the biggest surprises from Nintendo in 2019 so far, was the reveal of a remake of one of the most iconic Game Boy titles ever released: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

At E3 2019, we finally received some more details on the resurrection of this beloved classic. Nintendo featured a more in-depth look at some of the new features we can expect when the game launches later this year, during their Nintendo Treehouse presentation on Tuesday.

First off, let’s get the obvious out of the way: the game’s visuals look absolutely stunning!

Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening retains its predecessor’s top-down perspective; however, the game has been lovingly re-imagined into something more akin to a extremely detailed plastic diorama come to life.

This unique art style provides the game with a stunning vibrancy, oozing with charm and personality, that begs to be picked up and played. The game’s producer, Eiji Aonuma provided additional insight into the team’s motivations for using this style; stating that when playing the original Game Boy entry, he still felt that although the screen was very small, he still felt as though he had been transported into another world. This was a quality that he wanted to replicate and expand upon in the Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake.

When asked about why he chose Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening as the subject of a remake, Aonuma stated that he felt the original title was now difficult for players to find, so he wanted to bring it back to life for those who didn’t have a chance to experience it. He also added that the most recent entry in the series, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, was able to break a number of the conventions that have molded the series for the past two decades; and that now was the perfect time to return to a more traditional look at the game.

One other aspect new to the Zelda series that was briefly touched upon during Tuesday’s Nintendo E3 Direct, was a hybrid puzzle building/dungeon designer known as the “Chamber Dungeon”.

Players will earn a puzzle piece for each dungeon that they complete throughout their journey. These pieces can then be taken to the Chamber Dungeon, where players can arrange them into their own unique creations using an easy-to-use interface, and must feature two elements: an entrance and a dungeon boss. They then must attempt to defeat the challenges born through these new creations.

One question not answered though, was whether or not players will be able to share dungeon designs through the Nintendo Online service. Hopefully, we will get more clarification as E3 2019 progresses.

Whether you’re reliving the game after a number of play-throughs, or experiencing it for the first time, Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is shaping up to be a wonderful edition to the Nintendo Switch Library.

Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer to experience this classic rebirth. Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening will launch on the Nintendo Switch on September 20th, 2019!
