Double Dragon Is Back! – Double Dragon IV Coming In January
One of the most legendary titles of the 2D “Beat ’em Up” genre is set to return just in time for its 30th anniversary!
Billy and Jimmy Lee are back in all of their glory in Double Dragon IV, which is coming out January 31st on PlayStation 4 and Steam.
Double Dragon IV is being developed by 2D fighting game guru’s Arc Sys Works, the same studio responsible for the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue titles. While those games are well known for using gorgeous, high-end 2D sprite work, Double Dragon IV will return to the roots of the series: featuring a classic 8-bit style that would be home on the NES.
Arc Sys Works is further seeking to recapture the feel of the original games in the Double Dragon series by bringing on a number of members of the development team from the original.
Original Planner, Yoshihisa Kishimoto, Designer, Koji Ogata, and Composer, Kazunaka Yamane are all resuming their rolls to help make Double Dragon IV a truly authentic experience.
Now I know that you’re probably saying to yourself, how can this be the fourth Double Dragon game, when there were more than four Double Dragon’s that were previously released?
Valid question.
The original numbered series went up to Double Dragon III in 1990. There was a fourth game, Super Double Dragon, which came out for the Super NES in 1992. A fifth game, Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls, was released on Super NES as well in 1994, however, that title was a completely different experience; eschewing the traditional beat ’em up design of the original series for a 1-on-1 fighting game, not unlike Street Fighter.
So Double Dragon IV is the true sequel for the series, and will pick the story back up after the events in DDIII. This time the Lee brothers are taking the fight to Japan!
