Insomniac’s New Title Song of the Deep Features An Unlikely Partner

Insomniac’s New Title Song of the Deep Features An Unlikely Partner

The same company that helped you take flight as a lovable dragon in Spyro the Dragon, and explore the wonders of the universe in Ratchet and Clank is now preparing to take you on an entirely new journey: to the depths of the sea.

Insomniac Games has released their first trailer for Song of the Deep, a new 2D “Metroid-vania” style adventure.

In Song of the Deep, players will take on the role of Merryn, a young girl exploring the mysteries of the ocean as she searches for her father, after he went missing during a fishing expedition. According to the Official Song of the Deep website, Merryn awakes one night from a dream in which she saw her father trapped beneath the ocean. Merryn will explore this lush, underwater world both inside and outside of an old submarine that she builds and upgrades herself using spare parts she finds during the course of her journey.

One interesting tidbit of info surrounding Song of the Deep is that the title is being published by retail giant, GameStop. This will mark the first time that the retailer has actually published a video game.

According to an article on Fortune’s website the partnership between GameStop and Insomniac grew through a series of conversations between GameStop’s Senior VP of Marketing and Sales, Mark Stanley and Insomniac’s President, Ted Price.

“We decided to join forces with this great creative development team and put the promotional and marketing arm of GameStop behind it,” the Fortune article quoted Stanley as saying.

Song of the Deep will be offered this summer exclusively at retail through GameStop, however a digital version will also be available.

Song of the Deep will be priced at $15 when it launches mid-year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Are you ready to go under the sea in Song of the Deep? What are your thoughts on GameStop entering the actual publishing end of gaming? Sound off in the comments section below.
