I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream – PC

Based on the Harlan Ellison short story of the same name, the game I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream follows the last five living humans on Earth as the sadistic Allied Mastercomputer subjects them to cruel punishments and forces them into painful thought scenarios. As the player, you have to help these lost souls face their haunting pasts, confront their fatal flaws, and demonstrate to the god-machine that humanity’s spirit can never be truly extinguished.

Doom 3: BFG Edition – PC

Actually, now that I think about it, DOES Doom 3 count as an action game? I know it’s a first-person shooter, and the Doom 3: BFG Edition made some changes, but was it ever really meant to fill a gamer with the pump of adrenaline or just to try and spook them into turning up their monitor’s brightness? I look into this rehashed official third installment prequel (???) to see why this installment of id’s flagship series missed the boat on being truly successful.

  • Doom II – PC

    Doom II – PC

Doom II: Hell on Earth perfected the Doom formula to the fast-paced, heart-thumping standard we know today, introducing a new trademark weapon and many new and very deadly enemies. Add that to the countless mods that have been made for it, and there’s no other gaming classic around that gives you a better bang for your buck(shot).

  • Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem Forever – Xbox 360

Duke Nukem Forever is a game whose throes in development hell are the stuff of legend, and such is the power of its legacy that even this review has suffered its fair share of delays! Does this console release live up to twelve years of hype? Obviously not, but given that it’s still actually kinda fun, maybe that’s an unfair question to ask.

If this game didn’t invent the modern stealth genre, it certainly revolutionized it. Seiken Densetsu 3 – Super Nintendo

Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2) was originally released only in Japan, but since a fan translation emerged in 2000, the world’s had a chance to appreciate how special this hidden gem really is. From the many possible protagonists and potential party and class combinations to choose from, to the interweaving plotlines and multiple endings, this is a charming and fun title with enough replay value to keep you coming back to it time and time again.

The Apogee Shareware Disc – PC

Boy, it’s that time, isn’t it? After reviewing every single game I remembered from my old shareware disc, I take a look at the entire Apogee Shareware Disc itself and tell how I feel it worked both as a series of fun games and as a marketing tool! With first acts from many graphically-appealing and fun to play run-and-gun, first-person shooter, and flight sim titles, the disc may be long gone, but its memory definitely lives on!

  • Word Rescue – PC

    Word Rescue – PC

Word Rescue by Redwood Games is an excellent educational game for the younger children, teaching vital spelling and word association skills without taking them out of the gameplay. Another Apogee-sponsored classic, this is right up there with Math Rescue in being elementary school-level programs that just about any growing child could really prosper from, even today. Don’t be a Gruzzle, give a book a nuzzle! …That made more sense in my head.

  • Wolfenstein 3D – PC

    Wolfenstein 3D – PC

For almost everyone outside of Germany, Wolfenstein 3D was an explosive introduction to what many of us would regard as the proper first-person shooter genre. Back then, all you needed was a few guns, a bunch of Nazis, and hidden rooms behind push-walls. But does this dusty relic still cut to the core like granddad’s serrated WWII combat knife? Get psyched.

    Grim Fandango Remastered – PC

LucasArts’ original Grim Fandango’s masterful writing and creative concept made it a cult favorite upon its release, and now Double Fine’s brought it back as Grim Fandango Remastered. They may have only tightened up the graphics, loosened up the controls, and added in a swinging soundtrack that makes the dead bones dance again, but really, that’s all it needed. Experience anew this classic tale of intrigue and redemption that’s so good, it’ll chill you right to the bone.
